An e stamp paper is a computer-generated stamp certificate that proves you have paid stamp duty to the state government. In Madhya Pradesh it is issued through the state’s SAMPADA 2.0 portal, carries a unique certificate number and QR code, and has the same legal effect as old-style printed stamp paper. You can generate it online yourself or get it through an authorised service provider, and anyone can verify it on the SAMPADA portal or app.
Below: how it works in MP, how much to buy for common documents, how to check it is genuine, and mistakes to avoid.
What is e stamp paper, and why MP uses it
Stamp duty is a tax the state charges on many documents: agreements, affidavits, bonds, power of attorney, sale deeds and more. Earlier, you paid it by buying pre-printed stamp paper of a fixed value from a stamp vendor. Today, the more common route is an e-stamp: you pay the exact duty online, and the system prints a certificate with your details on it.
In Madhya Pradesh, e-stamping is run by the Registration and Stamps department (IGRS) under the Commercial Tax Department. Its system, SAMPADA 2.0, went live across the state on 10 October 2024, replacing the earlier SAMPADA system that had been in use since 2015. The same SAMPADA portal handles property registration, guideline values and e-stamps. For you, it means paying the exact amount, with a certificate that is hard to forge and easy to verify.
How e-stamping works in Madhya Pradesh (SAMPADA 2.0)
An MP e stamp is linked to a specific document type (called an “instrument” or “article”, for example Affidavit, Agreement, Power of Attorney) and to the parties. The portal lists well over a hundred instruments, and it calculates the duty for you once you pick the right one.
There are two ways to get one:
- Through a service provider: licensed service providers (the modern version of the stamp vendor) generate the e-stamp on SAMPADA for you. This is what most people do when they search “stamp paper near me”.
- Yourself, online: register as a citizen on SAMPADA 2.0, then use the e-stamp menu. This suits people comfortable with Aadhaar OTP and online payment.
Steps to generate an e-stamp online on SAMPADA 2.0
- Register and log in on the SAMPADA 2.0 portal or the official SAMPADA 2.0 mobile app.
- Open the e-stamp menu, start a new e-stamp, and say whether you are buying for yourself or for a firm or company.
- Select the correct instrument, for example “Affidavit” or the right type of agreement.
- Add the parties. An affidavit needs only the first party; an agreement needs both.
- Check the duty break-up. Depending on the instrument, it can include stamp duty plus municipal or janpad duty and cess (upkar).
- Choose non-judicial (for most documents in this guide) and pay through the SAMPADA wallet or online cyber treasury.
- If a drafted document is required, fill the template and e-sign with Aadhaar OTP or a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC).
- Download and print the certificate, then print or attach your document, sign it, and get it notarised or registered as required.
Tip: If money is debited but no e-stamp appears, do not pay again. Check the transaction status in your SAMPADA account first. Refunds, where allowed, are claimed on the portal by the buyer, and small-value e-stamps may not be refundable.
Physical stamp paper vs e-stamp: what is the difference?
| Point | Traditional stamp paper | E-stamp (SAMPADA 2.0) |
|---|---|---|
| How it is issued | Pre-printed sheets of fixed value sold by vendors | Generated online for the exact duty, with your details printed |
| Value | Fixed denominations, often had to combine sheets | Exact amount calculated by the system |
| Party and document details | Written by hand by the vendor | Printed: instrument type, parties, amount, date |
| Verification | Hard to verify, forgery risk | Unique number and QR code, verifiable online |
| Availability in MP today | Not the usual route; check with the issuing office before using old stock | The standard way stamp duty is paid |
Which e-stamp value to buy in MP: stamp duty for common documents
Stamp duty in MP is set by the Indian Stamp Act, 1899, as amended for Madhya Pradesh (Schedule I-A). The state amended several rates through the Indian Stamp (Madhya Pradesh Amendment) Act, 2025, in force from 9 September 2025. The table below covers the documents people ask us about most. For anything linked to property value, rent or loan amount, the duty is calculated, not fixed.
| Document | E-stamp value in MP (as of Oct 2026) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Affidavit (name change, gap, income, address, etc.) | ₹200 (earlier ₹50, raised in 2025) | Affidavits filed directly in court can follow different rules; ask before buying. |
| Rent agreement / lease | Depends on rent, deposit or premium, and period | See our rent agreement and MP stamp duty guide. |
| Agreement to sell (property) | Depends on whether possession is given | If possession is handed over, it is charged like a sale (conveyance) on market value. Without possession, a much lower duty applies. Get it calculated for your deal. |
| Power of attorney | ₹2,000 for a single transaction; higher for general / multiple transactions | A POA that lets someone sell property can attract duty linked to property value. |
| Indemnity bond | Commonly ₹1,000 | Confirm on SAMPADA when generating, as bank formats vary. |
Rates are revised by the state from time to time, and some instruments add cess or local duty. The amount SAMPADA shows for the correct instrument is the final word.
Tip: The value printed on the e-stamp must be at least the duty due for that document. Buying a higher value “to be safe” is a waste of money; buying less means the document is under-stamped and can attract deficit duty plus penalty if it is ever produced in court or at a registration office.

How to verify an e-stamp is genuine
Before signing on an e-stamp someone else bought (a landlord, builder or buyer), check it:
- Go to the SAMPADA 2.0 portal and use the “Verify e-Stamp” option on the home page, entering the e-stamp certificate number.
- Or scan the QR code on the certificate using the official SAMPADA 2.0 mobile app.
- Match what the system shows with the paper: certificate number, date, amount, instrument type and party names.
- Check the status. When an e-stamp is used for a registered document it is marked “consumed”, so an e-stamp that is already consumed should not be reused for a new deal.
If anything does not match, do not sign.
Mistakes to avoid with MP e stamp paper
- Wrong party name or spelling. The first party should normally be the person executing the document (for an affidavit, the deponent). A mismatch with Aadhaar can lead to rejection.
- Wrong article selected. An “agreement” e-stamp used for a power of attorney or a lease can leave the document under-stamped. Pick the instrument that matches the document.
- Buying too early. The Stamp Act expects a document to be stamped before or at the time of signing. There is no printed expiry date, but an e-stamp dated months earlier can raise questions, and refund windows are limited. Buy it when your draft is final.
- Going only by a bank’s letter. If a format says “₹500 stamp paper” or “as applicable”, confirm what MP law requires for that document.
- Skipping notarisation or registration. An e-stamp only pays the tax. An affidavit still has to be sworn before a notary, and leases of more than one year must be registered.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is e stamp paper legally valid in Madhya Pradesh?
Yes. An e-stamp generated through SAMPADA 2.0 is the state’s own record that stamp duty has been paid, and it is accepted in place of printed stamp paper. The document written on it still has to be signed, and notarised or registered where the law requires.
Can I buy e stamp paper online in MP myself?
Yes. Register on the SAMPADA 2.0 portal or app, select the instrument, add parties, pay online and e-sign with Aadhaar OTP or a DSC. Many people still use a service provider, because picking the instrument and entering party details is where most errors happen.
What is the stamp duty on an affidavit in MP?
After the Indian Stamp (Madhya Pradesh Amendment) Act, 2025, an affidavit in MP generally needs a ₹200 e-stamp (it was ₹50 earlier). Some affidavits meant for court use follow different rules, so mention the purpose when you buy.
How can I check if an e-stamp is real?
Use “Verify e-Stamp” on the SAMPADA 2.0 portal with the certificate number, or scan the QR code with the official SAMPADA 2.0 app. Match the amount, date, instrument and party names with the paper in your hand.
Does an e-stamp expire?
There is no printed expiry date, but the law expects a document to be stamped before or at the time of signing, so it is best to buy the e-stamp only when your draft is ready. Refunds of unused e-stamps are allowed only within limited time windows and not for every value.
Does a rent agreement on e-stamp also need registration?
A lease for more than one year must be registered under the Registration Act. That is why many rent agreements are made for 11 months. The stamp duty still has to be paid either way. Our rent agreement guide explains this in detail.
This guide is for general information and is not legal advice. Rules and fees change, so confirm current requirements before you apply.
