Udyam registration is the free, online registration for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) on the official portal, udyamregistration.gov.in. It works on your Aadhaar and PAN, needs no documents to be uploaded, and gives you a permanent registration number with an e-certificate. That certificate is what banks, government buyers and the MSME payment laws look for when they ask whether you are an MSME.
This guide explains the revised MSME limits, what the Udyam registration benefits really are, the step-by-step process, and how to stay away from fake websites that charge for a free service.
What is Udyam registration?
Udyam replaced the older Udyog Aadhaar (UAM) system from 1 July 2020. It is a self-declaration: you give the details, and the portal fetches PAN, income tax and GST data from government databases. There is no renewal, and the certificate carries a dynamic QR code that anyone can verify.
A few basics:
- One enterprise can have only one registration, but you can add several activities and units to it.
- Manufacturers and service providers get the full MSME status.
- Retail and wholesale traders can register too (allowed since July 2021), but for traders the benefit is limited to priority sector lending by banks.
- If you still hold an old Udyog Aadhaar or EM-II, you need to register on Udyam.
MSME classification limits from 1 April 2025
The limits were raised with effect from 1 April 2025 (Ministry of MSME notification S.O. 1364(E) dated 21 March 2025). A unit falls in a category only if it meets both the investment and the turnover limit.
| Category | Investment in plant, machinery or equipment | Annual turnover | Earlier limits (till 31 March 2025) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Micro | Up to ₹2.5 crore | Up to ₹10 crore | ₹1 crore / ₹5 crore |
| Small | Up to ₹25 crore | Up to ₹100 crore | ₹10 crore / ₹50 crore |
| Medium | Up to ₹125 crore | Up to ₹500 crore | ₹50 crore / ₹250 crore |
Export turnover is not counted. Investment and turnover figures are taken from your income tax return and GST data, so if your business grows past either limit, the portal moves you to the next category. That is why your ITR and GST filings should be correct and on time.
Udyam registration benefits: what MSME status actually gives you
MSME registration benefits are real, but they are eligibility for schemes and legal protections, not automatic money. Here is what matters most for a small business.
1. Priority sector lending
Banks have targets for lending to MSMEs under RBI’s priority sector rules, and they classify you using your Udyam certificate. It can make you eligible for MSME loan products, but the bank still decides based on your records and repayment capacity.
2. CGTMSE collateral-free credit
Under the CGTMSE scheme, lenders can give loans to micro and small enterprises without collateral or a third-party guarantee, because the trust guarantees a part of the loan. From 1 April 2025, the maximum loan covered went up from ₹5 crore to ₹10 crore. The lender decides whether to use the scheme, and a guarantee fee applies.
3. Protection against delayed payments
Under Section 15 of the MSMED Act, 2006, a buyer must pay a micro or small supplier within the agreed period, and that period cannot exceed 45 days from acceptance of the goods or services. If there is no written agreement, the limit is 15 days. Under Section 16, a late buyer owes compound interest with monthly rests at three times the bank rate notified by RBI. From 15 October 2025, new delayed-payment cases are filed on the MSME ODR portal, which leads to the MSE Facilitation Council; older cases continue on the Samadhaan portal. This protection is for micro and small enterprises, not medium ones, and not for traders.
4. Income tax push for timely payment
Section 43B(h) of the Income-tax Act, 1961, in force from 1 April 2024, says a buyer can claim a deduction for money owed to a micro or small enterprise only when it is actually paid, if payment is late beyond the MSMED Act limit. The same rule is carried into the new Income-tax Act, 2025. For you as a supplier, it means business customers have a tax reason to clear your bills on time.
5. Government tenders and GeM
Under the Public Procurement Policy for MSEs, central ministries and PSUs must aim to buy at least 25% of their annual purchases from micro and small enterprises. Registered MSEs get tender documents free and are exempt from Earnest Money Deposit (but not from performance security). On GeM, MSE status is verified through Udyam. These benefits are for manufacturers and service providers; traders and distributors are excluded. See our GeM and tender documentation solutions if you plan to bid.
6. State schemes
Madhya Pradesh’s industrial and MSME promotion policies offer incentives to eligible units, and a Udyam certificate is usually the first requirement. Schemes and conditions change, so check with the District Industries Centre (DIC) of your district before you plan around a subsidy.
Note: Udyam is not a licence to run a business. You may still need GST, a Gumasta (Shops and Establishment) licence, FSSAI or other permissions depending on your work.

Beware of fake Udyam websites
Search for “Udyam registration” and you will see many look-alike sites with official-sounding names that ask for a “registration fee”. The government portal itself warns that it is the only official site for MSME registration, that the process is completely free, and that no private agency is authorised by it.
- Check the address bar: it must be udyamregistration.gov.in.
- There are no Udyam registration fees. Any payment page means you are on the wrong site.
- Do not share Aadhaar OTPs with unknown callers or websites.
- Complaints can be made on the Ministry’s Champions portal.
Taking paid help from a professional to fill the form is your choice, but the government charges nothing.
Udyam registration documents and details you need
Nothing is uploaded, but keep these ready:
- Aadhaar of the proprietor, managing partner, karta (for HUF) or authorised signatory, with the linked mobile for OTP.
- PAN of the enterprise (the proprietor’s own PAN for a proprietorship).
- GSTIN, if your business is required to register under GST.
- Bank account number and IFSC.
- Business name, address of office and units, date of starting, and number of employees.
- Main activity (manufacturing, services or trading) and NIC codes describing your work.
- Investment and turnover; the portal fills these from ITR and GST where available, and new units declare them.
Udyam registration process: step-by-step
- Open udyamregistration.gov.in and choose the option for new entrepreneurs not yet registered as MSME.
- Enter the Aadhaar number and name, give consent, and validate the OTP.
- Select the type of organisation and enter PAN. The portal validates it and fetches ITR and GST details.
- Fill in the business details: name, units and addresses, dates, bank account, activity and NIC codes, employees, and investment and turnover.
- Answer the questions on linking to portals such as GeM and TReDS, if you want them.
- Submit with the final OTP. Your Udyam Registration Number (for MP it begins “UDYAM-MP-“) is generated, and the certificate is issued online.
Updating, printing and verifying your Udyam certificate
- Print: use “Print Udyam Certificate” on the portal and log in with your Udyam number and an OTP on the registered mobile.
- Update: use “Update/Cancel Udyam Registration” when your address, bank, activity or units change, then download a fresh certificate.
- Verify: buyers can check a supplier’s number with “Verify Udyam Registration Number”.
- Lost number: the portal has a “Forgot Udyam/UAM No.” option.
- Cancel: if the business closes, cancel the registration from the same update menu.
Udyam Assist Platform for informal micro units
Many very small units, like home-based businesses and vendors, have no GST and may not file returns. For them, the Ministry of MSME and SIDBI launched the Udyam Assist Platform on 11 January 2023. Registration is done through designated agencies such as banks, NBFCs and microfinance institutions, and the Udyam Assist Certificate is treated on par with a Udyam certificate for priority sector lending.
Getting it done in Indore
Indore has a wide mix of MSMEs: manufacturing units in Pithampur, Sanwer Road and Palda, traders in the old city markets, and service providers and home businesses across Vijay Nagar, Bhawarkua and the nearby towns. Enter the correct district for your unit: Pithampur, for example, falls in Dhar district, not Indore.
Kanha Associates helps you get the registration right the first time: choosing the correct activity and NIC codes, checking that your PAN, GST and bank details match, and lining up related paperwork like GST registration, the Gumasta licence and tender documents. We are not a loan or finance company and do not arrange credit. Most of the work can start on WhatsApp, but the Aadhaar holder must be available to share OTPs from their own phone.

Can traders get Udyam registration?
Yes, retail and wholesale traders can register, but the benefit for traders is limited to priority sector lending. Tender and delayed-payment protections do not cover them.
What is the 45-day payment rule for MSMEs?
