The main GST registration documents are the PAN of the business, Aadhaar and photographs of the owner, partners or directors, proof of how the business is constituted (partnership deed, incorporation certificate and so on), and proof of your principal place of business such as an electricity bill, rent agreement or consent letter. The government charges no fee on gst.gov.in. You apply online, complete Aadhaar authentication, and the officer has seven working days to approve a complete application, longer if a query or physical verification is raised.
This guide is for shopkeepers, traders, service providers and small manufacturers in Indore and nearby towns. It covers who must register, the documents for each business type, the newer Aadhaar and 3-day rules, and why applications get stuck.
Who needs GST registration in Madhya Pradesh?
Registration becomes compulsory once your aggregate turnover in a financial year crosses the threshold. Aggregate turnover is the total of your taxable, exempt, export and inter-state supplies across India under the same PAN.
- ₹40 lakh if you deal only in goods. Madhya Pradesh follows this higher limit (it does not apply to a few items such as ice cream, pan masala and tobacco).
- ₹20 lakh if you supply services, or both goods and services.
Some businesses must register whatever their turnover (Section 24 of the CGST Act). The common ones are anyone making an inter-state supply of goods (an Indore trader selling to a buyer in Gujarat), casual taxable persons such as exhibition sellers from another state, persons paying tax under reverse charge, sellers on e-commerce platforms that collect TCS, and the platforms themselves.
Two relaxations help small businesses. Service providers making inter-state supplies are exempt while turnover stays under ₹20 lakh. And since 1 October 2023, small sellers of goods on online marketplaces can sell within one state without registration if they stay under the threshold, make no inter-state sale and take an enrolment number on the GST portal (Notification 34/2023-Central Tax).
You can also take voluntary registration below the limit, which many small businesses do because business customers want a GST invoice, or a marketplace, tender or bank asks for a GST number. Once registered, you must file returns every period, even nil returns.
GST registration documents by type of business
All documents required for GST registration are uploaded as scans, so keep clear PDF or JPEG files ready. The portal shows the size limit for each upload.
| Business type | Main documents |
|---|---|
| Proprietorship | PAN and Aadhaar of the proprietor, photograph, place of business proof, bank proof (cancelled cheque, passbook page or statement) |
| Partnership firm | PAN of the firm, partnership deed, PAN, Aadhaar and photos of partners, authorisation letter for the signatory, place of business proof, bank proof |
| LLP | PAN of the LLP, incorporation certificate, LLP agreement, designated partners’ details and photos, authorisation, DSC, place of business proof, bank proof |
| Pvt Ltd company / OPC | PAN of the company, incorporation certificate, MOA and AOA, directors’ PAN, Aadhaar and photos, board resolution for the signatory, DSC, place of business proof, bank proof |
Proof of principal place of business
This is where most queries arise. What you upload depends on how you occupy the premises:
- Own premises: one ownership document, such as the latest property tax receipt, municipal khata copy or electricity bill.
- Rented premises: a valid rent or lease agreement, plus the landlord’s ownership document such as the tax receipt or electricity bill.
- A relative’s or shared premises: a consent letter (NOC) from the owner, plus the owner’s ownership document. There is no fixed government format for this letter.
A home address can be your principal place of business. If you use a rent agreement for the shop, check that it is signed by both sides, on proper e-stamp, and not expired. A Gumasta licence is not compulsory for GST, but it helps show that the shop really exists at that address.
Tip: The legal name must match your PAN exactly, and the address you type must match the bill or agreement you upload. A missing shop number or a different spelling of the colony is enough to trigger a query.
Aadhaar, biometric checks and physical verification
After you submit the form, the portal emails one of two links:
- An OTP-based Aadhaar authentication link. You complete it and the application moves ahead normally.
- A link to book a GST Suvidha Kendra (GSK) appointment for biometric Aadhaar authentication, a photograph and checking of original documents. This happens when the system flags the application on risk parameters. GSTN rolled this out for Madhya Pradesh on 27 November 2024.
If called to a GSK, each person named in the email goes in person with the appointment confirmation, original Aadhaar and PAN, and the originals of every uploaded document. Book the slot within the period given in the email; your ARN is generated only after this step.
Under Rule 9 of the CGST Rules, the officer must approve a complete application within seven working days. Where Aadhaar is not authenticated, or the premises are picked for physical verification, the limit is thirty days. Keep the address easy to find and someone available who knows the business.
The 3-day options from 1 November 2025
Notification 18/2025-Central Tax added two faster routes. Under Rule 9A, applicants the system identifies as low risk get registration electronically within three working days. Under Rule 14A, a simplified GST registration for small business, you can opt in if your output tax on supplies to registered businesses will not exceed ₹2.5 lakh a month. OTP Aadhaar authentication is compulsory, only one such registration is allowed per PAN in a state, and you must file a withdrawal (FORM GST REG-32) before crossing the limit later. These are limits in the rules, and risk checks can still add verification.

GST registration process: step-by-step on gst.gov.in
Here is how to get a GST number online:
- Part A: go to Services, Registration, New Registration. Select “Taxpayer”, Madhya Pradesh and your district, then enter the legal name as per PAN, PAN, email and mobile. Verify both OTPs.
- Get your TRN (Temporary Reference Number) and log in with it to complete Part B within the time shown (generally 15 days).
- Part B: fill business details, promoters or partners, authorised signatory, principal place of business (with its map location), goods and services (HSN/SAC codes) and state details. Upload the documents.
- Opt for Aadhaar authentication and submit with a DSC (compulsory for companies and LLPs) or EVC.
- Complete the Aadhaar OTP or GSK visit, then receive your ARN and track it under “Track Application Status”.
- Answer any query: if the officer issues FORM GST REG-03, reply in FORM GST REG-04 within seven working days.
- Download the certificate (FORM GST REG-06) with your 15-character GSTIN. MP GSTINs start with 23.
- After approval: display the certificate at your premises, add bank details if you skipped them (there is a short deadline), and start issuing tax invoices and filing returns.
GST registration fees: government fee vs professional charges
The government fee is nil; there is no challan on gst.gov.in. Any cost comes from outside: a DSC for companies and LLPs, e-stamp and notarisation if you need a fresh rent agreement or affidavit, and the charges of whoever prepares your application.
Avoid look-alike websites asking for a “GST registration fee”. Apply only on gst.gov.in, and never share OTPs with strangers, because an OTP works like your signature on the portal.
Composition scheme in brief
| Point | Regular scheme | Composition scheme |
|---|---|---|
| Turnover limit | No upper limit | ₹1.5 crore for traders, manufacturers and restaurants; ₹50 lakh for service providers |
| Tax | Normal GST rates, collected from customers | Fixed rate on turnover (1% traders and manufacturers, 5% restaurants, 6% services), paid by you |
| Input tax credit | Available | Not available |
| Inter-state sales | Allowed | Not allowed |
Which scheme suits you depends on your margins and customers, so discuss it with your CA or tax practitioner.
Common reasons for queries or rejection
- Name or address does not match PAN or the address proof.
- Rent agreement unsigned or expired, or landlord’s ownership document missing.
- Consent letter without the owner’s bill or tax receipt.
- Blurred scans or wrong photographs.
- GSK slot not booked in time, or no reply to REG-03 within seven working days.
- No business or name board found at the address during physical verification.
Tip: If rejected, read the officer’s reason before reapplying. Filing the same GST registration documents again usually gets the same result.
Getting it done in Indore
Whether you run a cloth shop in Siyaganj or on MG Road, a service business in Vijay Nagar, or a unit in Pithampur or Sanwer, the rules are the same. What differs is the district and jurisdiction: Pithampur falls in Dhar district, and Dewas and Ujjain have their own.
Kanha Associates helps with the documentation side of GST registration. We are not a CA firm and do not file returns. We check your papers before you apply, draft the rent agreement or consent letter, prepare affidavits where needed and help fill the application correctly. Most people start on WhatsApp by sending scans.
Some steps need you personally: OTPs come to your own mobile, a GSK check means visiting the centre named in the email, and physical verification happens at your premises. Our office is at Shop No. 3, 917 Khatiwala Tank, near Tower Chouraha, Indore, open Monday to Saturday, 10:30 AM to 7:30 PM. See our other business growth solutions like Udyam (MSME) registration, or get directions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What documents are required for GST registration for a proprietorship?
PAN and Aadhaar of the owner, a photograph, business address proof (electricity bill, tax receipt, rent agreement or consent letter with the owner’s proof) and bank proof such as a cancelled cheque.
Is there any government fee for GST registration?
No. Registration on gst.gov.in is free. You may spend on a DSC, e-stamp for a rent agreement, or professional help, but there is no government fee.
How many days does it take to get a GST number?
The rules allow seven working days for a complete application, thirty days if physical verification is needed, and three working days under Rules 9A and 14A. A query adds time, so treat these as limits, not promises.
Can I take GST registration on my home address?
Yes. Upload an ownership document such as the electricity bill, and if the house is in a family member’s name, add their consent letter.
Is GST registration compulsory for a small business below ₹40 lakh?
Not if you sell only goods within MP below ₹40 lakh (₹20 lakh for services) and do not fall in a compulsory category such as inter-state sale of goods. You can still register voluntarily.
Do I have to visit a GST Suvidha Kendra?
Only if the portal sends you a GSK appointment link. Most applicants get an OTP link instead.
GST registration is free and mostly online, but small document mistakes cause most delays.
